The Conservative Breakfast Group (CBG) will discuss recent political controversies in the town of Rock Hall at their meeting on Thursday, April 25.
The CBG meets every Thursday at 7:30AM at the Holiday Inn Express in Chestertown.
On April 18, the Chestertown Spy reported that Rock Hall Mayor Robert Willis has issued a Notice of Termination letter to Town Manager Ron Fithian. Ron Fithian also serves as President of the Kent County Board of County Commissioners. The Notice cited performance issues, but the nature of these issues has not been disclosed. Actual dismissal requires a majority vote by the Town Council within 15 days of the notice, but such a majority may be difficult for Mayor Willis to achieve. Councilmen “Butch” Price and Brian Jones have already announced they vehemently oppose the termination of Town Manager Fithian.
There are many other contentious political issues in Rock Hall. These include:
Approval of the application to build a “dollar store” across from Bayside Foods. Concerns have been expressed by residents that Rock Hall is too small to support another food store.
Future use for the “clam house”, currently owned by the Maryland Food Center Authority, but apparently largely controlled by the Town of Rock Hall. This former seafood processing plant has not been used for several decades as controversies have arisen over each of the many proposals for its use.
The proper use of prayer in meetings of the Town Council. Several residents feel that such religious observances are inappropriate at public functions.
Approval of an application to build a house in the wet lands buffer bordering Haven Harbor. Environmentalists have opposed construction of a new residential structure in the buffer around Haven Harbor.
Instituting a tram service paid for by the Town at a time of financial stress for many of its residents.
Learn more about these issues at our Thursday meeting. Perhaps you have some other unresolved issues you would like to discuss. Even better, perhaps you have some thoughts on how to bring closure to some of the issues faced by the Town of Rock Hall

And the elimination of curbside recycling, which only cost $150/month for the town plus it saved the town money by reducing the garbage taken to the landfill. I hope that someday the town council will regret their decision and find a way to re-institute it, with even greater participation.
