Chester River Advocates for the Blind (CRAB), a local non-profit support group for individuals with vision impairments, has been in existence for ten years. Some of the members have macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, or retinitis pigmentosa, but there are also sighted members who belong because someone close to them is visually impaired. The group offers resources such as access to and training with walking canes, and tips on how to live independently.
Occasionally the group invites speakers to come to the monthly meeting. Past speakers have included Chestertown Optometrist Dr. Hart, and Amy Crouse of Blind Industries and Services of Maryland. Members learn about new research as well as products and aids such as talking watches and talking calculators. New members are always welcome, and high school students needing to complete their service learning hours are encouraged to contact the group to volunteer.
CRAB Meetings are held every third Thursday at 10:00 am at the Trinity Lutheran Church on Washington Avenue and Greenwood Avenue in Chestertown. For more information, call President Charles Taylor at 410-556-6762.
