Second Annual Triathlon a Success at Kent School

October 25, 2012 by Spy Desk

Postcard-perfect conditions provided the ideal setting for Kent School’s second annual Osprey Triathlon. On Saturday, October 13th over 100 racers competed in three segments of the triathlon. The race began with a seven mile bike ride, followed by a two mile kayak paddle, and finished with a three mile run.

After racing for one hour and two seconds, Adam Stolzberg crossed the finish line first. Mr. Stolzberg, from Arlington,VA , was also the first place finisher in the 2011 Osprey Triathlon. “It was fun to come back and do this race again. My friends and I had such a blast last year it was a pleasure to return. This is such an incredible setting.” The first female to cross the finish line with a time of 1:08 was Holli Finneren of Washington, D.C.

Relay teams were popular in 2012 as they were in 2011. The relay option is open to anyone age nine and up as long as one team member is 16 years of age or older. “Relay teams are a great way for our students to participate. It’s exciting and gratifying to see them race hard on the course and then cheer for other students as they participate in their segments,” commented Chris Gorycki, Headmaster at Kent School.

Top finishers, with a time of 1:07:50, in the mixed age group relay was team Fordi consisting of Bob Fordi, his brother Jack, and Bob’s son, James (age 10). Chris McClary ’91, Kent School Board President, along with teammate Kahle Perez, took top honors in the two-person relay category with a time of 1:07. In the Over 50 category, Wendy Moore’s team consisting of Wendy, Belle Sampson, and Bruce Sampson, took home the first place trophy clocking a time of 1:20:50. In the Under 50 category,
the all-Kent School alumni team of Steve MacGlashan ’81, Catherine MacGlashan ’84 and Rob Joiner ’81 took home top honors with a time of 1:12:00.

This year race participation was up by 18%. “This is a trend we hope to continue. Next year, I’d love to see 200 racers,” said Tricia Cammerzell, race coordinator and Director of Development at Kent School. “Proceeds from the race benefit our need-based scholarship program. The more racers we have, the more children and families we can help. We also owe thanks to our corporate sponsors whose generous support helped us maximize our proceeds. Gunther McClary Real Estate, Dukes-Moore Insurance, Ohio Casualty, and Nexus Energy Homes were instrumental in the success of the race. Benchworks, PNC,
Chester River Landscaping, and David A. Bramble helped us host a terrific post-race reception.”

The 2012 Osprey Triathlon drew racers from near and far. Some competitors were familiar with Kent School while others had no relationship to the school. Cammerzell continued, “I love to see racers register from New York, New Jersey, Virginia as well as our local racers. It means that the Osprey Triathlon is helping to bring visitors to Chestertown which benefits all of our neighbors.”

Planning for the 2013 race is already underway. For more information about the race, visit www.kentschool.org or call
