The Women’s League of Washington College celebrated its 61 st year of successful fund raising for the college at its May meeting and Annual Spring Luncheon on May 15th. It was held at the Grieves-Jenkins Skybox at the Roy Kirby Jr. Stadium. League member Phyllis Roberts chaired this successful event.
Accepting gifts totaling $22,000, from League President Kathleen O’Connor, were Joe Holt, Washington College executive vice president; Dr. Ruth Shoge, director of the Clifton Miller Library; and Barbara Heck, associate vice president for leadership gifts. Also attending was student Allie Gorman, a scholarship recipient, who has just completed her Freshman year. Mr. Holt thanked the League for its generous and ongoing support, and gave an overview of the extensive projects the college is undertaking to benefit the entire college community.
The Women’s League was founded in May of 1951 by Helen Gibson, wife of Washington College’s 20th President, Daniel Gibson. Over the years the League has worked to fulfill its purpose of fostering relations between the college and community, and sponsoring projects to benefit the college. The League’s membership has grown substantially to include women from Kent and neighboring counties. At this final meeting for the academic year, new officers were installed and Board and Committee Chairs acknowledged.
