School Superintendent Dr. Barbara Wheeler presented the Board of Education’s Budget for next year to the Kent County Commissioners at the April 10 meeting. The proposed bottom line amounted to $30,847,421, or one million dollars more than this year’s allocation.
While the presentation started as a simple breakdown of projected financial needs for next year, it became a discussion of the ramifications of the newly passed House Bill 1412, which will affect how much money gets to the classroom through the state’s maintenance of effort mandate.
The passing of the bill has created considerable uncertainty for Maryland counties as they attempt to finalize budgets for next year. Meanwhile, lawmakers in Annapolis anticipate finalizing details of the controversial bill over the coming week.
