Larry Simms, President of the Maryland Watermen’s Association, will discuss current issues facing Maryland Watermen at our Conservative Breakfast Group (CBG) meeting on Thursday, February 9. The CBG meets every Thursday at 7:30 AM at theHoliday Inn in Chestertown.
The Maryland Watermen’s Association (MWA) is a strong advocate for the interests of Watermen in Maryland. Under Larry’s leadership, the MWA has grown to an organization of 12 county chapters since 1973. Among the many efforts they have underway to strengthen environmental management of our waterways, they have established a “Blue Crab Management Design Team” to work on developing a strategy for managing the commercial blue crab in Maryland, and are working with DNR to develop better ways to protect our oyster fishery. A few weeks ago, the MWA met with DNR Secretary John Griffin to explain the impact that Gov. O’Malley’s proposed increase in license fees will have on Maryland’s watermen.
The good news is that the fishing and crab seasons were good and that, in spite of plentiful supply, fish prices have stayed up.
