Henri Matisse wanted to “recapture that freshness of vision which is characteristic of extreme youth when all the world is new to it.”
Visitors to Artworks and the Chestertown Arts League have the opportunity to see through children’s eyes during an exhibit of work by students at seven local elementary schools– Garnett, Worton, Millington, Rock Hall, Galena, Radcliffe Creek and Kent School from January 6-28. An opening reception will be held from 5-8 pm on First Friday, January 6 at both Artworks and the Chestertown Arts League.
In 2011 Artworks expanded its children’s programs, particularly for those in grades K through 5. Artworks, recognizing the impact art can have on children, is working with the schools to bridge the gaps resulting from cutbacks and provide additional opportunities for the children to explore their creativity through art.
Art instruction improves manual dexterity, allows for exploration of various materials, stimulates creative thinking and problem solving, teaches good craftsmanship, and increases self-esteem.
The purpose of the exhibits is to raise awareness of the importance of art in the lives of children as well as to demonstrate the support by the community to stimulate creativity in youngsters.
