Local citizens, 4-H and Dixon Valve and Coupling are organizing a club for kids to explore Robotics –the Kentgineering 4-H Robotics Club. The organizers are currently soliciting interest by local boys and girls aged 9 to 17 years old. Interested kids and parents are invited to an organizational meeting 6:30PM Thursday, January 12, 2012 where meeting times will be established and questions about the program discussed.
The Robotics Club will meet regularly to explore concepts in designing and building robots using the LEGO Mindstorm system and the Arduino minicomputer. Activities will include designing and building LEGO Robots, and the practice and applications of programming. The club will be working this winter to prepare for the national LEGO Robotics Challenge next Fall for 9 through 14 year olds. Additional subjects for exploration will expand to mesh with the interests and abilities of the club members. Possible topics include C language programming on minicomputers, electronic circuitry, and “breadboarding” projects. If interest exists, the program can expand to include competing in the First Robotics Challenge for High School age enthusiasts. Both Robotics Challenges are national competitions for the best solution to a given problem using robots and creative ingenuity.
Dixon Valve and Coupling has made a magnificent work space available for the club’s use, and startup funding has been made available through the the University of Maryland Extension Kent County 4-H Office. The organizers need to know the extent of interest in this club in time before the organizational meeting in January.
