Sultana Projects Honors Massonis & Moores

September 8, 2011 by Spy Desk

Share

On September 17, Sultana Projects will present its Rosalind Havemeyer Award to Carla and Albert Massoni, and Clement and Elizabeth Moore. Named in honor of one of Sultana’s first and most dedicated supporters, the Rosalind Havemeyer Award is presented by the Board of Directors of Sultana Projects to individuals and organizations that have made a unique and long-term contribution to the organization. Previous recipients of the Rosalind Havemeyer Award include Robert and Janet Hewes, Mrs. Alonzo Decker, Allen Malcolm, Dr. Maria Boria-Berna and Dr. James Boria-Berna, and Donald and Darby Hewes. The 2011 Rosalind Havemeyer Award will be presented as part of Sultana Projects’ Annual Gala at the Sultana Shipyard in Chestertown on September 17.

“I can think of no one more deserving of this recognition than the Massonis and the Moores,” commented Sultana Projects’ Board Chair Patti Hegland. “Both have been part of Sultana Projects from the very beginning, and both have made incredibly important contributions to the organization.”

Carla Massoni served as a founding Board Member of Sultana Projects beginning in 1997 and has been an advisor to the organization ever since. Carla has played a critical role in the growth and evolution of Sultana Projects’ programs, most notably Downrigging Weekend for which her business, Massoni Art, was an initial sponsor. Albert Massoni has served on Sultana Projects’ development committee for almost a decade, and has made an enormous contribution to the success of Sultana Projects’ grants program. “Al Massoni has almost single-handedly helped Sultana Projects secure several significant grants that have made it possible for us to work with tens of thousands of Eastern Shore students and teachers,” said Sultana President Drew McMullen. “We would be a completely different organization without his and Carla’s help.”

Like Carla Massoni, Elizabeth Moore was an early Board Member of Sultana Projects, helping to guide the direction of the organization during the construction of the schooner SULTANA. Both Elizabeth and her husband Clement have continued their involvement with Sultana Projects, playing a major role in supporting Sultana’s Captain John Smith 400 Project, developing the Sultana Educational Center in Chestertown, providing program scholarships for thousands of Kent County public school students, and helping to plot out the organization’s future program development. “The Moores have been there at each critical step in Sultana Projects’ growth,” commented Sultana Projects Chairman Emeritus Joyce Huber Smith. “If there has ever been an example of what a couple of individuals can do to make a difference to an organization like Sultana, the Moores are it!”

Sultana Projects’ Rosalind Havemeyer Award will be presented at Sultana Projects’ Annual Gala on September 17 at the Sultana Shipyard in Chestertown. Tickets for this event are $100 per person, a portion of which is tax deductible. All proceeds from this event will go to support Sultana Projects’ educational programs.
