Washington College head men’s lacrosse coach Jeff Shirk has announced the hiring of Chris Miller as the team’s new senior assistant coach and offensive coordinator. Miller, whose first official day on staff will be tomorrow, replaces J.L. Reppert. Reppert recently accepted an assistant coaching position at his alma mater, Navy, under new Midshipmen head coach and 1986 Washington College graduate Rick Sowell.
Shirk and Miller previously coached together at Virginia Military Institute (VMI), where Miller served as an assistant coach under Shirk during the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Miller comes to Washington College from Sacred Heart University, where he was the offensive coach and recruiting coordinator during the 2011 season.
“Coach Miller is someone who I am very excited to work with again,” notes Shirk. “Chris coached with me at VMI for two years and did an outstanding job both with the offense and on the recruiting front. In a short period of time, he has developed a reputation in the coaching world as a young, motivated assistant who has the drive needed to be successful.”
Miller, who also had a brief stint as an assistant coach at Washington and Lee University, is no stranger to the Delmarva region. Miller’s first coaching experience came at his alma mater, Wesley College, in Dover, DE. He spent three years as an assistant coach for the Wolverines after a four-year playing career. A three-time All-Pennsylvania Athletic Conference first-team selection, Miller scored 144 career points at Wesley. He was named to the All-ECAC South second team in 2003 and his team’s offensive Most Valuable Player in 2004. As a senior, he served as a team captain.
Miller earned a B.S. in Physical Education from Wesley in 2005.
Reppert’s departure comes on the heels of former Washington College assistant coach Drew Delaney leaving to become Arcadia University’s first head men’s lacrosse coach following the 2011 season.
“I am very thankful to have worked with Coach Reppert,” says Shirk. “He is professional, passionate, and motivated to be the best coach he can. He did such a great job here that it helped open a door for him to return to his alma mater and coach at the Naval Academy. Of course, I do not want to turn over assistant coaches every year but it makes me very happy to have assistant coaches earn opportunities that further their careers due in part to their efforts and time here. I am going to take great pride in following the success of Coach Reppert at Navy and Coach Delaney at Arcadia.”
