Maryland’s First Lady, Katie O’Malley, launched a backyard vegetable garden at the Governor’s Mansion in Annapolis this spring. She got help planting from Master Gardeners from the University of Maryland and students from the Cedar Chapel Special School in Worcester County, who helped plant the first summer vegetable seedlings on Saturday, June 5. The students grew the plants in their school greenhouse.
O’Malley is opening a “Grow It, Eat It” garden to encourage healthy eating by growing one’s own vegetables, fruits and herbs. The campaign aims to encourage 1 million Marylanders to produce their own healthy foods.
Although this article, which came from hometownannapolis.com, says that the garden is modeled on a program Michelle Obama started at the White House, in fact, the ‘Grow It Eat It’ program is one from UMD’s Master Gardeners. Kent County’s Master Gardener Coordinator, Sabine Harvey, has planted and maintained two school gardens in Kent County, one at Worton Elementary the second at Chestertown Middle School.
The Governor’s Mansion is already Bay-Wise certified, another UMD Master Gardeners’ initiative.
For more information on Grow It Eat It, or Bay Wise certification, contact Kent County’s Master Gardener Coordinator, Sabine Harvey at 410-778-1661 or email: sharvey1@umd. edu.
