Visiting Haverford College scored three times in a span of 1:45 early in the second half to build a three-goal lead and held on for a 7-6 Centennial Conference women’s lacrosse victory over host Washington College tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Fords improved to 9-4 overall and 5-1 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 10-3 and 4-3 with the loss.
The Shorewomen scored two goals in the first eight minutes – both on free positions – to take a 2-0 lead. Freshman midfielder Carly Eisenbrandt(Baltimore, MD/Towson) scored 1:15 into the game and junior midfielderRachel Bartee (Mount Airy, MD/South Carroll) added the second goal with 22:16 left in the first half. Haverford got on the board when Josie Ferri foundGrace Stockbower for a goal with 20:07 on the clock. Neither team would score again until WC sophomore midfielder Mollie Shipley (Denville, NJ/Morris Catholic) gave the Shorewomen a 3-1 lead with a goal with 10:26 left before halftime. The Fords evened the scored before the break as Kenny Likes scored off an assist from Kayleigh Herrick-Reynolds with 7:30 to go and Perrin Downing netted a goal off another Herrick-Reynolds assist with 52 seconds on the clock.
The Fords’ three-goal spurt started with a goal by Ferri with 27:41 left in the game. Ferri then assisted on a goal by Likes with 26:44 to go and netted another goal, this one off an assist from Stockbower, with 25:56 remaining to give Haverford a 6-3 lead. The Fords controlled clock for much of the remainder of the game, keeping the Shorewomen off the board until junior attacker Liza Twilley (Salisbury, MD/Salisbury School) scored in transition with 10:57 to go to cut the lead to 6-4. Eisenbrandt followed with an unassisted goal with 9:44 to play to trim the lead to one goal at 6-5, but Herrick-Reynolds scored on a free-position shot with 7:18 left to put the visitors back up by two goals. A free-position shot by Shipley with 1:03 left again cut the margin to one-goal, but the Fords won the ensuing draw and maintained possession until Downing stepped on the end-line with 16 seconds to go. After a Haverford foul stopped the clock two seconds later, the Shorewomen were able to clear the ball, but a desperation shot by sophomore midfielder Marissa Restaino (Media, PA/Penncrest) as time was close to expiring was blocked by a Haverford defender.
Ferri led Haverford with two goals and two assists. Likes added two goals of her own, while Herrick-Reynolds had a goal and two assists. Leah Hammershclag made 11 saves in goal for the Fords.
Eisenbrandt and Shipley scored two goals each for the Shorewomen. Sophomore goalie Stephanie Seibert (Clear Spring, MD/Mercersburg Academy [PA]) made eight saves in the loss for Washington.
The Shorewomen held a 23-18 advantage in shots in the game and controlled eight of the game’s 15 draws. Both teams controlled the ball well as Haverford committed 11 turnovers but was a perfect 13-for-13 on clears, while Washington committed just eight turnovers and was 14-for-16 on clears.
The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at nationally-ranked Gettysburg.
