The Dirty Life: On Farming, Food, and Love

Kristin Kimball, author The Dirty Life, a memoir of falling in love with a man, a community and a way of life, says: “Farming keeps you close to the dirt and humble…But the best lesson farming has taught me is the deep pleasure of commitment—to Mark, to the farm, to a small town.”
The Kimballs live on Essex Farm, near Lake Champlain, in northern New York. They raise almost everything they need for a year-round diet, including 50 kinds of vegetables, herbs, grains, and fruits, plus pigs, chickens, and dairy and beef cattle. Most of the work is done with draft horses instead of tractors. Their farm is a CSA with 150 members. People come each week to pick up their share of organic produce, flours, milk, meats, and eggs.
This lecture is presented by the Center for Environment & Society, Farm Dinners on the Shore, the Joseph H. McLain Program in Environmental Studies, and the Sophie Kerr Committee.
