Visiting McDaniel College outscored host Washington College 11-2 in the final 3:15 of the game as the Green Terror topped the Shoremen, 73-66, on Saturday afternoon at the Cain Athletic Center in Centennial Conference men’s basketball action. The Green Terror are now 10-8 overall and 7-4 in conference action, while the Shoremen fall to 6-13 and 5-7 respectively.
McDaniel led 56-42 with 10:05 remaining in the game following a Cullen Murray-Kemp layup when the Shoremen went a 22-6 run to claim their only lead of the second half at 64-62 with 3:15 to go on a three-pointer by junior guard Sal Schittino (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola Blakefield). The Shoremen cut the 14-point deficit to two points at 56-54 with 5:53 to go in the second half on a free throw by junior guard Kevin Breslin (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti). The free throw capped a 12-0 run. McDaniel scored the next four points on free throws by Devon Lesniak to push the lead back to six points at 60-54 with 5:12. A layup by junior guard Mark DeBoy (Baltimore, MD/Mount St. Joseph) trimmed the McDaniel lead to 60-58 with 4:26 to go. After a Lesniak jumper gave the Green Terror a four-point lead at 62-58 just 16 second seconds after DeBoy’s layup, the Shoremen canned back-to-back three-pointers to take the lead. Junior forward Adam Naymick (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) narrowed the McDaniel lead to 62-61 with 3:50 to go and following a miss by the Green Terror, Schittino drained a trifecta to put the Shoremen up 64-62 with 3:15 left on the clock. It would be the last make for Washington in the game as the Shoremen missed their last four shots.
On McDaniel’s next possession, Evan Pupelis grabbed a rebound of his own miss and scored on a layup to even the contest at 64-64 with 2:52 left. After a missed layup by the Shoremen, Louis Sarris-Grau gave the Green Terror the lead back at 66-64 on a lay-in with 2:14 to go in the contest. After a Washington turnover, Murray-Kemp went to the charity stripe and made both to push the lead out to 68-64 with 1:59 to go. After another Washington turnover, Marcus Dyson stole the ball and scored on a fast-break layup with 1:45 to go to increase the McDaniel lead to 70-64. Two Breslin free throws cut to it to 70-66 with 47 ticks left, but the Green Terror hit 3-of-4 from the free throw line in the final 15 seconds to provide the final margin.
In the first half, McDaniel broke a 7-7 tie with 10 straight points to grab a 17-7 lead with 11:21 to go in the half on a Murray-Kemp jumper in the paint. Washington would cut it to 20-16 with 5:29 left in the first on a Schittino jumper, but the Green Terror closed out the half on a 16-9 run to take a 36-25 lead into the half.
McDaniel would push its 11-point halftime lead all the way up to 17 points with 15:14 left in the second half at 47-30 on a Lesniak three-pointer. The Shoremen cut the deficit to 52-42 on a Schittino free throw with 11:38 to go in the game to cap a 12-5 run. The Green Terror would score the next four points to take a 56-42 lead with 10:05 left in the game before the Shoremen went on their 22-6 run.
McDaniel’s Lesniak led all players with 25 points on 8-for-12 shooting from the floor and 7-of-8 from the foul line. Murray-Kemp added 13 points for the visitors, while Michael Jarboe chipped in with 10 points. Pupelis grabbed a game-best nine rebounds, while Tyler Rudd handed out four assists to tie for tops in the game. The win for McDaniel snapped a 17-game losing streak in Chestertown. The last time McDaniel won at Washington was an 84-80 victory on February 4, 1982.
For Washington, Breslin scored 16 points to lead the Shoremen and was one of four to score in double digits for the Shoremen. Junior forward Chris Olsen (Ellicott City, MD/Mount St. Joseph) and Schittino both netted 12 points, while sophomore forward Chris Soper (Poolesville, MD/Poolesville) had 10 points as he went 3-for-3 from the floor and hit all four free throws. Olsen tied his career-high in points in the game. Soper and Breslin each pulled down five boards to tie for the team high. DeBoy and senior guard Dylan Bernstein (Laytonsville, MD/Gaithersburg) both passed out four assists to tie for best in the contest.
McDaniel, who held a 46-26 edge in rebounds, outscored Washington in points in the paint (34-24), second-chance points (10-7) and fast-break points (8-4). The Shoremen outscored the Green Terror in points off turnovers (20-17) and bench points (31-23). The Shoremen turned it over 16 times; while the Green Terror coughed it up 26 times.
The Green Terror shot 46% from the floor, 40% from three-point range and 76% from the free throw line, while the Shoremen shot 37% from the field, 23% from behind the arc and 79% from the charity stripe.
The two teams participated in the 7th Annual Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers Awareness Weekend. In a joint venture with the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches, all coaches wore sneakers with their suits in the game to promote cancer awareness.
The Shoremen return to action on Wednesday evening when they travel to Haverford for a Centennial Conference contest with a start time of 8:00 p.m.
