The Women’s League of Washington College presents a check for $300 to members of the SIFE Program at Washington College.
This donation will be directed to the SIFE program called, “Community Food Boxes.” WC SIFE works with the Community Food Pantry to find families in Kent County who have a place for a container garden system called
the Earth Box, which is given to the family along with vegetable plants. The families, who are clients of the Food Pantry, are then able to grow fresh vegetables to supplement the non-perishable food provided by the Pantry. Each container can hold two tomato plants or a variety of other plants such as peppers, squash, etc. and has everything needed, including garden soil and fertilizer. All the family needs to do is water on a regular basis. Now in its third year, this program has received high praise from participants.
The Food Pantry clients are able to enjoy healthy food without an impact on their limited budgets. In addition to providing fresh vegetables for their own families, many have reported sharing their harvest with extended family and friends. The families keep the Food Boxes, and in the subsequent year are given plants and fertilizer.
The Women’s League’s donation will provide Community Food Boxes for 6 families. There are 29 families who have expressed an interest in participating this year, so WC SIFE welcomes additional donors who would like to support this program. Interested donors can contact Susan Vowels at [email protected] or (410) 778-7755. This year’s project manager is Dominic DiMarino, a first year student at Washington College.
