It was business as usual for Wayne Morris, director of Public Works, at Tuesday’s commissioners’ meeting.
Morris gave an overview of the county roads situation. To date, the county has spent $198,848 on road resurfacing, leaving close to $50,000 for projects in the spring.
“Hopefully we won’t have a winter like this [past] year and we’ll be able to use some of that money for road repairs,” said Commissioner Ron Fithian.
The roof on the EMS building in Lynch “is in desperate need of repair,” Morris said. During the last few storms shingles have been blown off by high winds. Three quotes were obtained for the roof project, Commercial Roof Coatings LLC of Kennedyville, $4,950; J and M Builders of Chestertown, $6,377.54; and Price Roofing of Church Hill, $7,202.50. The commissioners approved the bid from Commercial Roof Coatings. The money would come out of the county’s contingency fund.
Along with the roof, the siding along the back of the storage section of the building is rotten and needs to be replaced. Materials for the project would cost approximately $500, Morris said. The work could be done in-house with staff and inmates from the Kent County Detention Center.
James M. Wright Jr., county engineer, wrote in a letter to the commissioners, “I recommend we perform this work to protect the files and other miscellaneous items stored there by various departments.”
The commissioners approved replacing the siding with the understanding that the $500 could come out of the county works budget.
Dan Voshell, county roads division chief, met with representatives from the State Highway Administration (SHA)and Whittman Associates last week to discuss bridge inspections. SHA issued a contract to the bridge inspection firm to begin inspecting the county’s 12 bridges Nov. 1. The state will pay for the inspections but the county would have to pay for any repairs.
Two reports and a plan of action will be issued to the county 75 days after inspections start.
