As forecast, this has been a good summer for crabs. Some watermen are unable to sell all of the crabs they are catching and in some cases, the catch is running ahead of the processor’s ability to keep up, according to Jason Ruth, seafood buyer at Harris Seafood in Grasonville. Fewer picking houses now than in the past has also limited how much can be processed. Watermen are getting as little as $20 a bushel this year for the smaller crabs for picking houses and the larger male crabs for the restaurant are fetching between $60 and $80 per bushel.
