Annapolis Maryland (June 6, 2010) – The Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) are investigating a hit and run boating accident that occurred near Thomas Point Light, Chesapeake Bay between Fishing Creek and South River at 2:30 pm on Saturday, June 5.
The accident occurred when Mark Gentile, age 55 from Alexandria, Va jumped off his anchored sailboat to retrieve a minnow pot that was in the water. As Gentile was swimming towards the minnow pot, a vessel ran over him. In an attempt to evade the vessel, Gentile dove under the water. The boat struck both Gentiles’ legs. Gentile was able to swim back to his sailboat and keep himself afloat with the help of a line from the boat.
A passenger on Gentile’s sailboat called 911 for assistance. When NRP and Coast Guard units arrived on scene, Gentile slipped below the surface of the water. A NRP Officer and a member of the Coast Guard jumped into the water to bring Gentile back to the surface. Gentile was put onboard the Coast Guard vessel, where members of the Anne Arundel County EMS provided aid. Gentile was transported the Annapolis Coast Guard station where he was airlifted by MSP to Shock Trauma for injuries.
NRP is investigating the boating accident. The striking vessel is described as a 21 foot Donzi type vessel, white and champagne in color. The vessel was occupied by a white male and white female, 30-40 years of age. NRP is requesting anyone who has information regarding the identity of the vessel or witnessed the accident call NRP Communication Center at 410-260-8888 or toll free at 800-628-9944 and ask for Ofc. Murray Hunt.
