Another Day, Another Fight, at KCHS

December 20, 2009 by Simon Kelly

It’s getting to be like a variation on the old hockey joke — only this one would go:  they went to a fight and school broke out.

On three occasions this past week sheriff’s deputies have had to subdue brawling youths at Kent County High School.

In the latest incident, on Thursday afternoon, a 16-year-old Rock Hall youth was charged with 2nd degree assault on a 17-year-old Chestertown youth. The sheriff’s office reported, “The incident occurred while the victim was waiting for the school bus.”

Just the day before, shortly before the final bells, occurred what officers described only “a physical altercation” involving four boys aged 15 to 17, three of them from Chestertown and one from Worton.

All four were charged with disorderly conduct, and three with assault 2nd degree, then transported to the sheriff’s office, and then released to family members.

So it’s looking to be a record season for fisticuffs at Kent County High, one school where some learning really does get pounded into your head. This is the third week in a row in which students have been charged with assaulting other students.

On Monday it was a 17-year-old Millington youth whomping on another 17-year-old Millington youth. The Kent County Sheriff’s office report on the incident on Monday reads: “The accused assaulted another student with his fists at the KCHS. The altercation occurred during the operation of school in the cafeteria.”

Last week  two 15-year-old boys brawled in the gymnasium during class hours. A  Galena youth was charged with 2nd degree assault of a Golts teen.

The week before that a 15-year-old Chestertown boy was charged with assault 2nd degree of a 15-year-old Rock Hall boy. “The incident took place in a classroom while class was in session,” the sheriff’s office reported.

Wow – another act of violence at the high school! I wish I could feign surprise at this news.

I just wonder how many more incidents like this one will need to occur before the Kent County Public School system (along with the Board of Education) admit that there is a problem at KCHS? How severe will the injuries need to be before the Administration wakes up and reaches out for help?

I just hope and pray that my son isn’t caught in any crossfire.
