A boating accident on the Susquehanna River that left two men injured is being cited by Maryland Natural Resources Police as a cautionary tale for sportsmen everywhere.
“Preliminary investigation reveals that a 21-foot Ranger bass boat was being operated at a high rate of speed when it struct a submerged object,” the NRP reported.
“The force of the collision propelled the vessel’s 225-horsepower outboard engine into the passenger compartment of the vessel.”
The NRP said the engine struck the operator, Walter Ross Jr., 52, of Havre De Grace, and his passenger, Willie Barrett Jr., 44, of Middle River.
Barrett was ejected from the vessel, and Ross used his cell phone to call for help.
Area fire companies responded to the scene and transported the victims to shore. Ross was transported to Bay View Hospital and Barrett was transported to Shock Trauma in Baltimore with serious injuries.
The NRP reported both men were wearing lifejackets when the accident occurred, about 2 p.m. Sunday on the Susquehanna near Havre De Grace.
