“I love bread, but I watch my carb in take, so I’m very particular where I spend my carb calories. This is definitely one of my favorites. I’d recommend a particular product, but they are all 5*. Get there early, because they sell like hot cakes.”

“I would like to see various forms of cheese bread displayed at this smorgasboard of bread. Hoping to see three cheese bread, asiago-parmesean bread, famunda cheese bread, and the like…”

–Chris Cerino
“Super job Kurt! It’s great to see our band get the recognition it deserves!! Can’t wait for the full-length feature!”
–Sara and David Quinn
“Ain’t that America? I can feel the breeze in Kent County and smell the buds on the trees as I hear the band marching along. Thanks for this tasty morsel. Looking forward to seeing more. Good luck!”

Editorial: A Second Life
Excellent, John! Since you have an international dimension you will clearly need a regular contributor from London to keep you up to date with duck pond MPs and the like! Good Luck!

“Thank you, thank you. If one can be sentimental about a newspaper, that would be me. I remember the smell of the ink and the sound of the big presses running in the old brick building on the corner- it’s brought tears to my eyes watching it emptied over the past few weeks. The people working there would get me Cokes from the red and white machine with the vertical door and ice cold glass bottles. Somehow you’ve brought back some of the spirit of what it used to be…and should be. I think my Dad would have liked it too.”
–Heidi Usilton Anthony
“Could the police release more information about these calls in Chestertown? It might be nice to know what level of crimes is going on out there.”
–Nick
Hi Nick,
“As a member of the town council, I’m interested in addressing your question about ‘what level of crimes are going on out there.’ Would you mind elaborating?”

“Thank you Chris and Dave for a thoughtful interview. You captured the side of Castelli that provides a roadmap to the heart of his paintings.”

“I learned how to make real tamales a few years ago. It is a lot of work, but the results are well worth it!”
-Sarah
“Dear Spy, dang! I need to visit. And how about the great little tienda up on north 213 just beyond Walgreen’s? Loads of chiles, quesos, chorizo…and I picked up some much needed cooking ingredients up there. Including a ready-to-use mole paste.
We’re heading into fresh corn season and I’m looking for a seasoned Mexican cook to teach real a group of us real tamales. Anybody know anybody?”

Foreign Owners Hurting KC News
“Sad news indeed. For the twenty-four years I have been a business owner on the Eastern Shore, I have relied on the Kent County News and the Star Democrat to publicize my businesses. It has been a unique relationship and one I have always appreciated. Mary Burton has been my “go-to” person – shaving lines off ads when my budget was tight – rushing ads in for me at the last minute – facilitating press releases and their publication. That’s just the tip of the iceberg too – all the charities and non-profits have counted on the coverage we’ve received over the years – often at reduced prices – to reach out to our constituencies. Where will we be when someone in Australia makes the decisions about the “Mutt Strut” or “First Friday” or “Women Helping Women” or the other numerous educational and charity events? Local newspapers are the life blood of a community. It might be fun to criticize the local “rag” – but I for one would be lost without it. I welcome the Chestertown Spy into the mix – but it will take time to achieve the outreach already present with the KCN and the SD.”
–Carla Massoni
“So what exactly does it mean that ‘it’s gone from bad to worse’? The Aussies must think there’s gold in them that regional news media to bother stretching out tentacles as far as Kent County. Or is it a case of eventually eliminating some kind of far-flung competition?”
–Nancy Robson
“Rupert Murdoch, anyone? Certainly, the Kent County News isn’t FOX, but it does make you wonder any time a megarich foreign conglomerate gobbles up a media outlet. Interesting post.”

Kent Finds Stimulus Unstimulating
“Nice article… and reported the subtleties of the session. I think this is going to be a great forum for the citizens to hear what we hear at the CC meetings. Plus… it’s always nice to get a public comment from our common sense CC.”
–Bob Kramer
“At last !!!! The writer of this article took the time to fully explain the issue that was discussed at the meeting. By reading this article the public has a clear understanding of what transpired. Thank You!!!!!”

Boaters Beware of Fairlee Creek
“I am a 41-year-old man who has enjoyed sailing, motor boating, skiing and windsurfing in this area all my life. Don’t mess with Mother Nature. I personally pulled one of the idiot sail boaters out of the well-marked shallows at the end of last year. The sailor was not from this country and tried to enter Fairlee Creek under sail (wind power only). The basic shape and path of the channel has remained the same all my life. It has always made a hard turn following the shoreline when you exit the mouth of the creek. I have seen boats get stuck there every year that I can remember. I pass large boats going out of the channel with room to plenty of spare on both sides of them and me. It has always been a little tricky with the fast currents at certain tides, but I have never seen a collision in all my years. Trying to dredge a channel could change the unique shape of the protective cove. Do we really want to spend taxpayer money to assess changes & risk the creek to widen the channel so that a few of the 70 association members can pass each other side-by-side at the same time? Why not do what boats have always done- If your not sure you can fit past another big boat, wait your turn to go through after it goes by. It’s not rocket science.”

Kent County Becoming Geezer County
“Thank you for publishing these types of articles. They tell a real story about Kent County and where it is heading. It may have been my mistake but the correct number of high school students has decreased from 1300 to 680 instead of 880 which makes the issue even worse.”
–Ronnie Fithian
“Thank you Spy for posting this article in a nice, big, font so I could read it.”

“The High School opened in 1971 and I believe that it was in the late 1970s that it reached its peak enrollment. I recalled that there was something in the neighborhood of 1325 students in the High School during my Senior year of 1976. Today there’s less than a thousand more in the entire public school system.”
–Steve Atkinson
“A healthy community is one that is self-sustainable. A self-sustainable community is one where a logical succession can occur between generations. Kent County has massive disparities between rich and poor. Does the Arby’s franchise owner in town honestly expect the drive-thru cashier to buy them out? Who are these mythical people from elsewhere that come in and suddenly make it all sustainable?
I don’t see there being a lot of well-to-do Gen X’er natives and recent arrivals snapping up all these supposed assets people think they have at the prices these Baby Boomer sellers are counting on in coming years.
A reality check is probably in order: Chestertown has more in common with Cambridge than Annapolis. And if that sounds like a riddle instead of a fact, you may be sorely disappointed when you decide to cash out…”

CSI Crumpton: Husband is Charged
“I can’t tell you how happy I am “The Chestertown Spy” exists… it’s so refreshing to have well-written, new, relevant news available on almost a daily basis. $2.4 Mil for Armory? No Says Town
“At 500k it made sense, as the town could buy it, flip it if needed with restrictions, and make a profit. 2.4 million makes no sense for anybody.
I have believed strongly all along that the Town should exercise its right of first refusal, and was pretty appalled when there was the initial appearance (to me, an outsider relying on the Kent County News coverage alone) of a sweetheart deal to Roy Kirby using the Town’s ability to get the property at a 500k price.
At the 2.4 million price point, let a developer (or Washington College) take a bath on the place. We ain’t that special or unique, folks…”

High Street Crime Wave Scares Neighbors
“I lived on the top floor of 423 High Street in 1994/95. It is a shame that it is now taken over by undesireables. But everything changes and not always for the good. I hope Mayor Bailey continues to monitor the problem as Historic Downtown Chestertown is a very special place and needs to be preserved.”
–Joan Hill
Gibson Anthony says
Dear Spunkmeyer,
Just wanted to clarify a point. The possibility of the Armory being sold to Mr. Kirby was a deal with the County, not the Town. Ultimately the Town stepped in to ensure a rigorous process and to possibly apply restrictions, for the benefit of the community, to the sale. Compared to many other armory deals statewide, a town paying market value would be very unusual.
Nick says
Gibson,
It would be fantastic to know whether a police call for a robbery is just someone’s missing mailbox or if a burglary occurred at a residence and thousands of dollars worth of jewelry were stolen. It would also be useful to know if a string of crimes has been committed and if the police are investigating possible connections. Basically, it’s more concerning if a trend is presenting itself than if the neighborhood kids are playing pranks during the boring months of summer.
Hope that helps and thanks for asking for more info.
Nick
