On Sunday, November 27, at 10 a.m., Rosemary Ramsey Granillo will give a sermon entitled “A Decade in El Salvador” for the Unitarian Universalists of the Chester River, 914 Gateway Dr., Chestertown. Rosie Ramsey Granillo was born and raised here in wonderful Chestertown. A Jesuit education led her to El Salvador, where the history of resistance and solidarity “ruined her for life.” She spent seven years working with the organization “Voices on the Border” in communities of former guerillas and refugees who organized to build humble but resilient communities. Her experience as a community organizer, wife, and mother amidst stark contradictions — violence and love, oppression and liberation — was profoundly transformative. She now brings this perspective to her work for children, youth, and families in our very own Family and Community Partnerships of Kent County.
The words of a favorite UUCR hymn “This is My Song” are particularly poignant for Rosie: “This is my song, O God of all the nations, a song of peace for lands afar and mine. This is my home, the country where my heart is; here are my hopes, my dreams, my holy shrine; but other hearts in other lands are beating with hopes and dreams as true and high as mine.”
We are delighted to have Rosie’s husband, Fredy Granillo, sing and play for the Fellowship again on this Sunday.
Childcare for infants and toddlers will be available during the service.
