The Garfield Center of the Arts announces auditions for Edward Albee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, A Delicate Balance, considered a masterpiece in classic theatre. First produced in 1966, this dark drawing room comedy proved to be just as powerful thirty years later, winning a Tony for its 1996 revival. The New York Times described it as “an evening of Theatrical Fireworks”
Auditions will be held at the Garfield (210 High Street in Chestertown) on July 19th and 21st at 6PM, and July 23rd at 11AM.
Director Bonnie Hill is seeking a cast of four women (ages 30 -70) and two men (ages 55- 75). Familiarity with the play is helpful, but not necessary. Actors should come prepared to do cold readings from the script. Performances are scheduled for two weekends: October 14th – 16th, and October 21st – 23rd, Fridays and Saturdays at 8PM, and Sundays at 3PM.
Agnes and Tobias, an older married couple, are seemingly content with their upper class suburban lifestyle. Agnes’ alcoholic sister Claire lives with them and, except for an occasional outburst, the three of them maintain a comfortable balance in the home. Over the course of a weekend, their complacency is shattered when a bitter adult daughter returns to the “nest” after the collapse of her fourth marriage, and their long-time friends arrive on the scene, with no intentions of leaving… ever!
