While the Sultana Education Foundation’s new LEED Platinum Education Center in Chestertown won’t open to the public until late Summer, a select group of children will get a sneak peak at the facility through a new summer program known as Bay Discovery Camp. Bay Discovery Camp will join Sultana’s existing mix of outdoor summer programs – including week-long trips on the schooner SULTANA, and multi-day paddling adventures on the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail. In contrast to Sultana’s existing programs, Bay Discovery Camp will be the Foundation’s first to be targeted at children as young as five to eight years old.
The goal of Bay Discovery Camp is to encourage young children to begin looking at the natural world through the eyes of a scientist.
Using the Education Center as a base-camp, students will explore a variety of outdoor environments; including shorelines, marshes, woodlands and meadows, and then return to the Center’s new Wet Lab and classrooms to examine specimens they have collected in the field. Age-appropriate games, activities and fun will also be a major part of the program.
Sultana’s Bay Discovery Camp will be led by long-time Radcliffe Creek School teacher Debbie Johnson, with the assistance of a team of Sultana Education Foundation staff and interns. Two week-long sessions will be offered in July, the first from July 11 – 15, and the second from July 18 – 22. Bay Discovery Camp runs from 9:00am to 3:00pm each day. Tuition is $275 per week, with no-hassle financial aid available.
