David Keating Chestertown
“I’ve been in Kent County since 1975. What brought me here was my ambition to be near the water for my boat. I came down because of an ad in the paper about a house, and this intrigued me. I thought it was too far away from where I lived, in Delaware County, but I came down anyway. One look at the place and: sold. It was over, you know.
The former station was built in the late 40s, and it was a typical gas station…I decided to build [K&L Services]…when I did that, I also incorporated as many things as I could at that time to lessen the burden on my footprint here. Recycling oil filters, oils, plastics as much as we could, bottles. I also tried to make sure that the drainage here, which is usually contaminated with some form of petrochemical, that would limit them going down to the sewer, so we have a trap set up, the best that we can, because we can’t capture everything.”
David Keating was interviewed by Caitlin Patton Rosenberg and photographed by Philip Rosenberg
Editor Note: The Chestertown Spy and RiverArts have partnered in 2016 to share the art organization’s community arts project “Humans of Kent County,” designed to celebrate the wonderful, unique folks who live and work in Kent County. Citizens are invited to interview and photograph from young to old from all corners of the county and to submit a photograph and brief story to be part of the project. It will be posted on the Spy each week and each quarter the most interesting photos and stories will be enlarged and produced for an exhibition at the RiverArts gallery in Chestertown.
