If you’ve walked or driven down High Street recently, you may have noticed there is something happening behind the construction fence in the front window at 200B High Street. On April 1, during First Friday from 5-8 p.m. you can finally see what has been going on behind the window. We are pleased to present “Art on High,” the newest venture in Chestertown’s Arts & Entertainment District.
“Art on High” is a partnership between two local artists. Sherrie von Sternberg of “Corsica Studio” will be running her photography studio from this location. Jodi Bortz will be operating her letterpress printing studio “Blue Canary Letterpress” from the space as well. Jodi and Sherrie welcome on-demand and custom photography and design requests for weddings, businesses, and everyday life. The two met working on other artistic projects around town and saw the possibilities of creating a new arts-based business in Chestertown.
In addition to being a working studio, the space will feature fun and interesting artwork from emerging artists and artists with a special story to tell. The first show is titled “We Didn’t Start the Fire.” Local artists, along with artists from as far away as France and Spain will have work on display. Among the artists featured are Kevin Smee, a Maryland artist and drummer who creates his art by repurposing drum kits into new and innovative pieces. Another artist, Leslie Gerhart describes herself as an “artist, mother, and disabled superhero.” She uses her work to uplift and support those suffering from silent illnesses.
Robert von Sternberg is our featured artist. He has been a professional photographer and teacher for more than 35 years. He has works in permanent collections in such renowned places as Museum of Modern Art, New York City; Bibliotheque Nationale de France, Paris, France; Federal Reserve Board Art Collection, Washington, D.C; and Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey, just to name a few. His works are highly prized by photography and art collectors throughout the world. Von Sternberg says he “identifies human incursions into the natural world as a recurring theme at the heart of (his) photographic practice.”
The works in the show will be for sale, as will various letterpress novelties. “We Didn’t Start the Fire” will be on display until May 29. Please stop by and let us welcome you to our new artists’ studio and gallery. For more information, email [email protected], visit our website at www.artonhigh,com or call 443-282-0134.
