The word of the morning at the town dock was “ephemeral” as we watched the wind and wave torn “Sankalpa” sculpture being pulled to the dock in a downpour.
For a week “Sankalpa” rose to the pinnacle of what Chestertown’s public art can offer us and became a perfect example of the extraordinary creative spirit this town enjoys.
When we risk nature as our gallery we submit to its own directives: wind, rain, turbulent water. It becomes a kind of offering, a gift, and one, in this case, Nature accepted it according to her own lights.
Vicco von Voss’ “Sankalpa” gave us precious days as we watched it float through our lives. We participated in those moments and wanted to hold on to them, but were taught that “Sankalpa” signifies evolution and transformation. Change.
There’s something perfect about that.

Louise OBrien says
I am so sad about the end of the Sankulpa and feel so terribly sorry for von Voss, his wife and his friends who poured their hearts and souls into this project as well as their commitment of time and hard work.
That sculpture was a beautiful piece of art. Along with the physical extravaganza, there was a spiritual component to it which affected most of us who were fortunate enough to gaze upon it before it died.
