They are convening in Rock Hall for an evening of jazz with Mainstay favorites Chuck Redd on vibes and Robert Redd on piano.
Chuck Redd, who put the evening together for the Mainstay said, “Robert and I are thrilled to be playing with these three incredibly talented women from New York. Nicki has played the Mainstay with us before and audiences have always been delighted with her chops on the bass and her singing. Sheryl and Sherrie are new to the Mainstay and we think the audience will be delighted to hear these two major talents who are really making a name for themselves in New York. We expect to have a lot of fun!”
Chuck Redd is well known internationally as a performer on drums and vibraphone. He began recording and touring the globe when he joined the Charlie Byrd Trio at the age of 21. He also became a member of the Great Guitars (Barney Kessel, Byrd and Herb Ellis.) To his credit are 25 European tours and six tours of Japan. He re-established himself as a piano player and was soon very much in demand. He was a member of the Keter Betts trio for 13 years, until Betts’ death in 2005, was pianist and musical director for singer/songwriter Kenny Rankin and worked often as a member of the Charlie Byrd Trio. Elliot Simon of All About Jazz called Sheryl Bailey “A sizzling guitar goddess.” She took up guitar at age 13 and initially wanted to play rock but early studies of the music of Wes Montgomery, George Van Eps, Joe Pass and other jazz guitarists took her in another direction. She eventually attended and now teaches at Berklee College of Music. With her trio the Sheryl Bailey 3, she plays regularly in New York and also tours extensively in the U.S., Europe, South America, the UK and Australia. She also tours as a member of David Krakauer’s “Klezmer Madness” and she rocks alongside fellow guitar virtuoso Vic Juris, with the “Electric Ladyland Project.” She has recorded 8 CDs and of the recording “Live at the Fat Cat”, Joe Taylor says, “…this disc proves again that Sheryl Bailey is one of the most gifted and exciting jazz guitarists on the scene”, and that she is a “jazz composer of the first order.”
From her seat at the drums, Sherrie Maricle leads her big band DIVA, her quintet FIVE PLAY and The DIVA Jazz Trio. With her three bands, she has performed at acclaimed music venues and major jazz festivals throughout the United States and abroad. DIVA has been featured on the soundtrack for NBC’s 2014 Macy’s Fireworks Spectacular; on CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood; and on TCM’s televised broadcast of the 25th Anniversary of the Kennedy Center.
