COVID-19: Mid-Shore Update with Corey Pack

In what will be a frequent update with Corey Pack, president of the Talbot County Council, and a key member of various statewide and regional emergency response teams, the Spy talks to him from a county and Mid-Shore perspective on the status of COVID-19’s impact of our health and economic system among other topics.

In this first installment, Corey talks about the number of tests and their results by UM-Regional Shore Health and Choptank health systems as of Thursday, a unique local response to the need for hand sanitizer for our first responders, and resources for those challenged with mental illness issues.

Chestertown Tea Party Festival Canceled

It is with regret that the Chestertown Tea Party Festival Committee has made the decision to cancel the 2020 Festival. So much remains unknown with respect to the COVID-19 pandemic. Experience from countries infected at a much earlier date than the United States suggests that infections could continue over a period of two to three months. Even after infections have slowed and current public guidance to practice social distancing have been lessened, we fear many of our fellow citizens will be reluctant to subject themselves to large crowds for some time to come. In fact, it may remain impossible for large crowds to gether until a vaccine has been released. As a result, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our festival this year.

The health and safety of our vendors, entertainers and that of our festival patrons, was the overriding factor in making this decision. We look forward to hosting the festival once more during Memorial Day Weekend in 2021.

Profiles in Spirituality: Presbyterian Pastor Joel Tolbert Comes to Chestertown

Finding one’s way to the pulpit takes unique twists and turns for many seeking to do God’s work, but it was uncommonly special in the case of Pastor Joel Tolbert. After losing his father to suicide when he was only six years old, he and his mother would eventually leave their Baptist roots while he was growing up in Suburban Atlanta. From there, Joel would follow a fairly traditional track by earning a degree in engineering from Mercer University and a career in project management, marketing, and sales.

But his marriage to his wife, Jill, after college, who was preparing for a vocation in the Presbyterian Church, dramatically changed his view of religion and his own faith in God. Soon after they wed, both of them found themselves enrolled at the Columbia Theological Seminary to complete their masters of Divinity degrees. The results of which have led to a life of service to his faith, including his recent calling to lead the Presbyterian Church of Chestertown.

The Spy sat down with Pastor Tolbert earlier this week to talk about his faith, the challenges and joys that come with his ministry, and on building a church community based on sacrifice and God’s will.

Mid-Shore Education: Saints Peter and Paul School Takes a Big Step

Saints Peter and Paul first built a school in Easton in 1990 as a temporary structure with only 14,000 square feet, or about the size of a large ACE hardware store. That building was so well designed that it has taken two decades for the School, its volunteer leaders, and the Diocese of Wilmington, to decide to build a new facility adjacent to its main church on South Washington Street.

That decision did not come easily since the new building, as well as a new family center for the Parish, came in with a price tag of $18 million. That was one extremely large enchilada for any institution on the Mid-Shore to take on. Still, with passionate leadership, a devoted community, and perhaps some spiritual support, almost $16 million has been raised, and ground has been broken.

Interested in all of the Eastern Shore’s small mouses that roar, the Spy sat down with two key stakeholders, Father James Nash, pastor for the Church and School, and Saints Peter and Paul School principal, James Nemeth, to better understand its master plan.
