“Variations 2.0: 1 Photograph, 16 Paintings” Opens on July 14 at The Trippe Gallery

July 10, 2023 by Spy Desk

Share

The Trippe Gallery will be opening a particularly unique exhibition on July 14. “ Variations 2.0: 1 Photograph, 16 Paintings” will feature the work of 16 gallery artists. Following on the heels of the success of this exhibition in 2022, the idea for the exhibition developed from gallery owner and fine art photographer Nanny Trippe’s post on social media of a photograph of the high tide, sky full of clouds and Tred Avon River after a significant storm. Gallery artist Cynthia Rosen commented it would make a great painting. It spawned a call to the gallery plein air painters, current competitors and alumnae Plein Air Easton artists, to paint their variation of the photograph. No guidance, no rules, paint at will. This year’s show will be even more exciting than last years! The resulting 16 paintings show an incredible diversity of interpretation, style and vision. Some are quite realistic, some impressionistic, one a nocturne, one abstract, several have other features added.

The sixteen artists participating in the exercise are Olena Babak, Jill Basham, Beth Bathe, Zufar Bikbov, David Csont, David Diaz, Stephen Griffin, Stephen Haynes, Charlie Hunter, Len Mizerek, Elise Phillips, Crista Pisano, Cynthia Rosen, John Brandon Sills, Nancy Tankersley, and Mary Veiga. Each of these 16 artists has an individual style quite unlike the others.

In addition to the Variations exhibition, there will be a conversation with 2022 Grand Prize Winner Charlie Hunter about his work en plain air. The Trippe Gallery represents 24 artists who are current or alumna Plein Air Easton participants all year.

This is an exhibition not to be missed for its intriguing theme and variety of artistic styles! There will be an opening reception meet and greet with the artists from 5-8pm on July 14. During the reception, visitors will have an opportunity to vote for their favorite painting as well as test their knowledge of Plein Air Easton artists by matching the artist to the correct painting! The winner will receive a gift certificate to the gallery. The Trippe Gallery is located at 23 N Harrison St in the heart of historic Easton. For more information, please call 410-310-8727 or visit the website thetrippegallery.com.

Zoetrope, Watercolors by Katherine Binder, on View at Adkins Arboretum

July 6, 2023 by Adkins Arboretum

Share

For Katherine Binder, art is a process that helps her understand the nature of the world around her. Stunning watercolors of birds of prey, rabbits and plants paired with human organs fill her show, Zoetrope (Wheel of Life/Life Turning), on view at Adkins Arboretum through Sept. 1. There will be a reception to meet the artist on Sat., July 15 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Binder’s art is deeply influenced by her practice as an acupuncturist and prosthetist and her interest in traditional Taoist medicine. As beautifully descriptive as natural history paintings and as inspiring as images in illuminated manuscripts and Tibetan Buddhist tangka paintings, each of Binder’s works offers a compelling narrative that explores the relationships between plants, birds, animals and the human body.

The show’s title, Zoetrope, comes from the Greek words zoe (life) and tropos (turning) and refers to a 19th-century optical toy in which slits in a spinning cylinder reveal a series of pictures painted on the inner surface, giving an impression of continuous motion. One of Binder’s paintings, also titled “Zoetrope,” shows a zoetrope with the life cycle of a dandelion flower painted on the inside.

“If it were animated, the viewer would be watching the dandelion grow, bloom, wither, die and grow again and again,” Binder explained.

There’s a curious magic in her paintings that stems from her extensive research into scientific illustrations and field studies, as well as myths and archetypes. With precision and flair, she deftly conjures the characteristics, interrelationships and life energy of each of her subjects, often highlighting them with gold paint to emphasize their sacred nature.

Katherine Binder, “Hawthorn Berry Heart,” watercolor, gold paint over graphite underdrawing on paper, 24″ x 18″ unframed.

In her work as an acupuncturist and prosthetist, as well as in her art, Binder draws on Taoist medicine’s complex system of correspondences between the human body and the natural world. The correspondences between plants and individual human organs are the subject of her “Yin Organs Herbal Series,” in which she links the shape and color of the human heart with the red berries of the hawthorn and the liver with reishi mushrooms growing on a tree stump.

Myths and fables also factor into Binder’s work. A snake may symbolize the life force or rebirth, while rabbits may call to mind good luck and intuition. Her art-making process, like her work as an acupuncturist, is based on channeling energy. Working in a meditative state, she allows ideas to flow through her onto the paper.

“I have powerful muses,” she said. “They are not the slight sweet ones that you see gently whispering into the ears of an artist. My muses are muscle-bound brutes who startle me awake, pull me out of bed, drag me down the stairs and seat me at my art table.”

During the year after her father’s passing, Binder was unable to paint. It was only when she learned that a Eurasian eagle-owl she knew from visiting the Central Park Zoo had escaped that her muses began to return. As she followed the bird’s story, she found herself painting him with a scrap of a broken tether still wrapped around one leg. From there, she began painting other raptors—screech owls, a barred owl, a red-tailed hawk and, finally, influenced by a recurring dream, a peregrine falcon flying free. With the gentle humor found throughout her work, she calls these paintings her “Rapture Series.”

Throughout this show, Binder invokes the visceral qualities of each organ, plant, bird or animal while setting them humming with symbolism and a sense of life cycles and interconnection.

“When I look at the body of work created for this exhibit,” Binder said, “I see my life—the griefs and joys that were the catalyst for each piece. The bitter sweetness of life is the zoetrope, the wheel of life. All of it, even the weeds, are precious, sacred and exquisite.”

This show is part of Adkins Arboretum’s ongoing exhibition series of work on natural themes by regional artists. It is on view through Sept. 1 at the Arboretum Visitor’s Center located at 12610 Eveland Road near Tuckahoe State Park in Ridgely. Contact the Arboretum at 410-634-2847, ext. 100 or [email protected] for gallery hours.

Barbara Parker Performs on The Mainstay’s Outdoor Stage

July 4, 2023 by The Mainstay

Share

Barbara Parker

On Friday, July 21, The Mainstay in Rock Hall, Maryland welcomes one of its favorite local performers to its outdoor stage (weather permitting). Singer songwriter Barbara Parker, originally from Seattle and now a long-time resident of Kent County, has written songs, sung, and accompanied herself on guitar since she was a young girl. But for a number of years, she stepped back from music, deferring to her career in the advertising industry. An invitation to perform at a local Open Mic night about 10 years ago jumpstarted her return to performing. Since then, she has appeared solo and with musical backup at some of the Mid-Atlantic’s best-loved stages and listening rooms.

Parker’s original music comes from an understanding of her own and other’s emotions, and wistfulness for what lies beyond the horizon. Her stage presence summons memories of the grand folk dames of classic coffeehouses, and the giant female stars of old-time country such as Patsy Cline. But she is equally capable of assigning her signature voice to the iconic tunes of her favorite performers, including John Hyatt, Joni Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon, and James Taylor. She will be accompanied on the program by Joe Holt on piano, Stu Gray on guitar, Sam Moore on percussion, and Elbert Hicks on bass guitar.

In addition to her music, she is also a highly regarded painter. Her work, typically embodying bold colors and patterns from the landscape of Chesapeake country, can be viewed in a number of local businesses frequently visited by the public.

Showtime for the live concert event is 8 pm. Tickets are $20 in advance of the show and can be purchased online at mainstayrockhall.org. Phone reservations are accepted by calling (410) 639-9133 (tickets reserved by phone are $25 when paid at the door). The Mainstay is located at 5753 N Main Street in Rock Hall, Maryland. Its regular calendar of local, regional, and nationally touring artists features a live performance every week of the year (February through December) in a variety of music genres.

The programs of the Mainstay are supported with funds from the Maryland State Arts Council and the Kent Cultural Alliance.

Painting in the Moment

July 4, 2023 by Spy Desk

Share

Red Maple on Charles Street, oil, 12×12 by N. Thomas

On First Friday, July 7th, and throughout the month of July, The Artists’ Gallery in Chestertown will feature paintings in oil by Nancy R. Thomas in her new show, “Painting in the Moment.” Painting from life requires moment by moment decision making as the light is constantly changing. The artist has to commit at some point to the pattern of the shadows and what is important enough to include or be edited out. These decisions must be made in the heat of the moment, according to Thomas. It is the immediacy of plein air painting that she thoroughly enjoys! The show includes new work from recent Plein Air Festivals as well as studio paintings from life.

Nancy came to the Eastern Shore in 1994 from Alexandria, Virginia, where she pursued dual careers of dancing and painting for over two decades. Her painting classes were taken at The Torpedo Factory, The Corcoran School of Art, A Project Study Tour of Italy and Northern Virginia Community College, where she earned an Associate’s Degree in Fine Art in 1990. Thomas is a signature member of the Baltimore Watercolor Society and a member of Oil Painters of America and The Working Artists Forum. She has been a Partner in The Artists’ Gallery since 2010.

Thomas juried into the Working Artists’ Forum in 1996 where she held the position of President for three years (2006-2009.) Nancy has co-chaired and juried into the Local Color Show, held each year in conjunction with Plein Air Easton, for 17 years. She juried into Plein Air Easton in 2018. One of her exhibition pieces was purchased by The Avalon Foundation for a permanent collection featuring agricultural scenes on the Eastern Shore.

Thomas finds the light of the Eastern Shore to be captivating and enjoys capturing the waterways, dramatic skies, the farm fields and farmhouses on canvas. She paints with The Plein Air Painters of the Chesapeake Bay and is one of 28 artists juried into Paint Ellicott City 2023.

The public is invited to visit The Artists’ Gallery for an opening reception on First Friday, July 7th from 5 to 8 p.m. for light refreshments and to meet the artist. The Artists’ Gallery is located at 239 High Street in Chestertown and is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Sundays from 12:30-4:30 p.m. For more information about The Artists’ Gallery and Nancy’s new show, please visit www.theartistsgalleryctown.com or call the gallery at 410-778-2425. Authors & Oysters: Jospeh Koper

July 1, 2023 by Spy Desk

Share

The Bookplate is continuing their Authors & Oysters event series at The Retriever Bar on Wednesday, July 5th at 6pm. All are invited to The Retriever to welcome author Joseph Koper as he discusses his book, The Isaiah Fountain Case.

Koper’s book is the first modern detailed account of the mostly-forgotten story that outraged Talbot County, Maryland a century ago. The Isaiah Fountain Case tells the story of a sensational rape case that convulsed Talbot County and made national headlines early in the 20th century. The story of Isaiah Fountain is told through court documents and hundreds of contemporaneous newspaper articles. Koper’s book documents dubious investigative and judicial actions and raises questions about Isaiah Fountain’s guilt and the Jim Crow legal system that convicted him.

“This rigorous account clearly shows that Isaiah Fountain suffered a fate he didn’t deserve.” -Kirkus Reviews

“The story of Isaiah Fountain is a must read, particularly for anyone seeking to learn more about America’s difficult past. This century-old story was new to me and I am grateful to Joe Koper for this magnificent book.” – Paul Brandus, Dow Jones/MarketWatch and USA Today columnist and White House correspondent, West Wing Reports

“A well-researched tragic story.” – John R. Wennersten, historian and professor emeritus of environmental history, University of Maryland-Eastern Shore

Joe Koper is a “come-here” to Talbot County, Maryland, where he retired with his wife, Jackie, following service in the U.S. Army and a career spent largely in human resources management.

A graduate of Gannon College and George Washington University, Koper has become fascinated with the long and rich history of the county and the Eastern Shore. The Isaiah Fountain Case is his first book.

For more event details contact The Bookplate at 410-778-4167 or [email protected]. This event is free and open to the public and reservations are not required. The next Authors & Oysters event is scheduled for 7/19 with author Gerald Sweeney. All events are held in the back room of The Retriever, located at 337 ½ High Street in Chestertown, Maryland.
