Learn About Battle of Caulk’s Field with Kent CBG

August 2, 2014 by Kent Community Breakfast Group

Share

Timothy Lloyd Tilghman will lecture about the Battle of Caulk’s Field celebrating its Bicentennial Anniversary on August 31, 2014. Join the Community Breakfast Group (CBG) on Thursday, August 7, 2014, at 7:30 am to learn about this impressive War of 1812 military victory in Kent County. The Caulk’s Field battleground is one of the best preserved War of 1812 battlefields remaining for Americans to visit present day.

Sir Peter Parker, a calculating British naval officer, garnered a brash reputation by pillaging the farms and livestock of Chesapeake Bay residents. Approaching midnight on August 30, Parker anchored the HMS Menelaus near Fairlee to conduct a nighttime assault. American scouts alerted Lt. Col. Philip Reed who assembled Maryland Militia situated near Caulk House erected in 1743.

Parker, caught by surprise of cannon fire, ordered his sailors to engage an attack. During the intense firefight, Parker was struck in his thigh and bled to death on the battlefield. The British sounded a retreat carrying the deceased Parker back to his ship. Maryland had secured an important battle victory following the burning of our country’s Capitol only one week before, lifting the spirits of a war weary populace.

Lieutenant Henry Tilghman, serving in Captain Bedinfield Hand’s company, Maryland Militia 21st Regiment, commanded three volunteer artillery divisions at the battleground on August 31, 1814. Tilghman, a distant family relative, earned his Master of Arts degree from the University of Baltimore in December 2002.

Federal Budget for FY 2015 Topic at April 10 CBG Meeting

April 5, 2014 by Kent Community Breakfast Group

Share

Dr. Peter Metcalf will describe the federal budget process and the implications of the FY 2015 Budget at the April 10 breakfast meeting of the Community Breakfast Group (CBG).

The federal fiscal year begins on October 1 and ends on September 30. The budget process calls for presidential, House, and Senate budgets, with the latter two to be resolved in a budget conference to arrive at the discretionary topline level from which the 12 appropriations bills are written. This process completely collapsed in 2013. Instead, one massive appropriation bill was crafted in secret meetings between the White House and the Congressional leadership to provide a framework for managing the Federal government. This appropriation bill was called a “continuing resolution”. This dysfunctional budget process was repeated for FY2014.

Prospects for returning to the regular process for FY2015 are not promising. The presidential budget proposal was issued a month late. The Republican House and the Democratic Senate are as far from cooperating as they have ever been, and this is an election year so there will be more political posturing this year than last.

Perhaps more troubling is the content of the President’s budget. It proposes major increases in taxes and spending, with the Federal Government spending share of GDP increasing to 21.4% of GDP. It ignores the “debt ceiling”. It proposes increasing taxes on corporations owned by the public by 24%. None of this will help increase the output of goods and services of our country.

Peter received his PhD in Chemical Engineering and Economic Theory from Cornell University and has retired from a career in engineering and business planning. Since his retirement, he has taught Finance at John’s Hopkins University and serves as a Registered Investment Advisor.
