What stands out in our recent interview with Sara Biden, a Royal Oaks resident and, interestingly, former President Joe Biden’s sister-in-law, is how she has turned a very fun idea into meaningful support for breast cancer care on the Eastern Shore.
Inspired by local stories about alleged witches on Plain Dealing Creek in Talbot County and the idea that early witches were often healers, Sara created the Witch Paddle during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. She has devoted considerable time and energy to building it into a community fundraiser for Shore Regional Health’s Clark Comprehensive Breast Center.
This year, the goal is to raise the final $40,000 needed for a new Faxitron at the center. Down the road, Sara hopes to help establish a surgical chair that would attract—and keep—an excellent breast surgeon in the region.
But another unexpected and refreshing part of our interview comes when Sara describes working closely with Scott and Tracey Wagner, well-known conservative supporters of Republican candidates and owners of The Oaks. Their partnership is a welcome reminder that such collaborations can set aside real political differences and work as a community.
