Sultana Announces Fall 2026 Community Classroom Schedule

The Sultana Education Foundation has announced the Fall schedule for its Community Classroom program. Launched this spring, Community Classroom invites learners of all ages to participate in interactive classes, workshops, and lectures led by experienced historians, scientists, and subject experts. All programs are free, accessible, inspiring, and rooted in real-world learning.

Community Classroom’s Fall Session kicks off September 17 with a launch event for Jennifer de Mooy’s new book, Water, Carbon, Time – Peatlands in a Warming World. The book combines travelogue, ecological history, and a call to protect fragile, waterlogged ecosystems from damage and the release of stored carbon.

On September 19, Community Classroom’s popular “Bluegrass Jam,” led by Steve Dannenfelser, returns. The twice-monthly event continues through December, welcoming players, singers, and bluegrass lovers for an informal Saturday afternoon jam.

In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the schooner SULTANA, artist Marc Casetelli will discuss his book, Building Sultana, on September 26. The book recounts SULTANA’s three-year construction through pen-and-ink drawings and stories from the volunteers who built the schooner.

Beginning October 7, Sultana Vice President Chris Cerino will present his three-part “Chesapeake 101” program. Using SEF’s innovative Geographic Projection System, the program offers an engaging overview of what makes the Chesapeake one of North America’s most distinctive ecosystems. Advance registration is required.

Also returning this Fall is the three-part “Introduction to American Mahjong” class led by Sally Shea, Kate Mason, and Trams Hollingsworth. The program filled quickly during the Spring Session, so advance registration is required.

On November 19, noted farmer and conservationist Trey Hill will discuss Sustainable Farming. Hill approaches farming as a creative endeavor, exploring new techniques and connections to create transformative change.

Community Classroom’s Fall Session concludes December 5 with “The Crankies Show,” presented by puppeteer Philip McKnight. The program will showcase several “crankies,” a historic narrative art form featuring an illustrated story wound between two spools.
