Op-Ed: How I Would Grow Our Kent County Economy by Building on Our Strengths By Thad Bench

Kent County does not need to lose its unique character and beauty to build a stronger economy.

In fact, I believe our greatest opportunity is to build on the strengths we already have: a hardworking business community, productive farms, rich maritime heritage, outstanding natural resources, vibrant small towns, and people who care deeply about this place.

After more than 40 years building successful businesses, I’ve learned that economic growth doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when people have the confidence to invest, hire employees, and put down roots. County government can’t create prosperity—but it can create the conditions for it.

My economic plan centers on three priorities.

First, we should invest in tourism as one of the fastest ways to grow our economy. Kent County already has everything visitors are looking for—historic towns, waterfront communities, outdoor recreation, working farms, great restaurants, and authentic Chesapeake culture. We need to tell that story better, extend our tourism season, strengthen our downtowns, and support the businesses that welcome visitors every day.

Second, we need to grow our year-round economy by supporting light manufacturing and businesses that fit Kent County. I’m not interested in chasing massive industrial projects that change the character of our county. I want to attract businesses connected to who we already are—marine manufacturing, value-added agriculture, food production, and other industries that provide good jobs while strengthening our existing economy.

Third, we need to do a better job supporting the businesses that are already here. The cheapest job to create is the one we don’t lose. That means listening to employers, making county government easier to work with, improving permitting, helping family businesses transition to the next generation, and connecting entrepreneurs with the resources they need to grow.

None of this works unless we invest in people. We need stronger partnerships between Kent County Public Schools, Chesapeake College, Washington College, and local employers so students can move directly into careers in agriculture, maritime industries, manufacturing, healthcare, construction, and the skilled trades. At the same time, we have to make it possible for those workers to live here by expanding attainable housing opportunities close to jobs and our towns.

The status quo isn’t enough. We need county government to think strategically, invest wisely, and work alongside the private sector instead of getting in its way.

I know what’s possible because I’ve spent my career building businesses right here in Kent County. If elected, I’ll put my experience to work and bring the same practical approach to county government—focusing on real opportunities, measurable results, and an economy that creates jobs while preserving the character that makes Kent County such a special place to call home.

  1. Thank you Thad! Tell us more. You have my vote because you have a visionary approach to business. The status quo we currently accept as able to build a sustainable future has fallen woefully short. Yours are not new ideas but the energy and can-do approach you bring to finding new paths forward are exactly what we need.
