Nestled in the heart of Galena, Sassafras Primary School is a new option for families of elementary-age students. The micro-school builds on the success of Kinder Connection, a childcare center and pre-kindergarten next door with the same board of directors.
Focused on multi-age play-based learning, the school teaches using the latest research including the science of reading while still educating students using a Christian perspective.
A typical day for children enrolled would include a few minutes of direct instruction in each subject followed by a play-based activity to reinforce the concept. In math, that might look like play money and a store where children can buy things to learn about dollars and cents. In language, letter formation might be reinforced with play dough instead of handwriting drills. In science, students might make a sundial and use it to track the sun’s movements after reading a passage about light. In social studies, after completing a worksheet about emergency personnel, students may enjoy a visit from a paramedic who shows them their emergency bag and the back of an ambulance.
In addition to enrichment classes on site including music lessons from Mooday’s Music, dance and PE lessons from Jennifer’s School of Dance, Spanish, bible and art, students will engage in regular field trips in the community. From canoeing the Lawrence Wetlands Preserve to exploring the zoo, hiking Eastern Neck Island, to learning about local history at the Delaware Agricultural Museum, there are monthly off-site activities planned.
The school aims to fill a need in our community for families looking for Christian education with small class sizes. For others, the attraction may be dedicated blocks of indoor and outdoor play time daily.
The concept for the school came when founder Elizabeth “Ellie” Greenwell struggled to find the right fit for her own children with learning differences. “I see the research. That children learn best in smaller settings. That play-based learning is important for all children. That physical activity – especially outdoor time – is vital. I know studies are showing that children shouldn’t be glued to a device at school. And then I see the reality of what teaching has become. Twenty-five years in the classroom has shown me that one size doesn’t fit all for children’s learning needs and I wanted to create a safe space for children to learn in a fun, engaging way that was affordable for families.”
In addition to full-time enrollment, the school offers a Homeschool Connect & Create option. This is ideal for families who want to homeschool but desire an enrichment drop-off program for their child or need childcare so they can work part-time. Homeschoolers ages 4+ are welcome to attend one or two days per week.
Opening in August, Sassafras Primary School is an exciting addition to our community. It’s 1:12 ratio will be appealing to families looking for extra support. Their slogan “inquiry, nature, arts, community” certainly encompasses their vision. Children entering Kindergarten through 3rd grade are welcome to apply for the 2026-2027 school year. The school will expand each year so that current students may stay enrolled for all of elementary school.
