Kent County High School senior Sam Buckel will be attending Columbia University in New York City this fall.
Buckel was accepted to the prestigious university Dec. 14 through the Early Decision process. Those accepted to Columbia via Early Decision are committed to attending the Ivy League school founded in 1754.
Buckel, whose mother is a doctor and whose father is an educator with Kent County Public Schools, plans to study Public Health on the pre-medical school track.
U.S. News and World Report lists Columbia as No. 2 in National Universities, right behind Princeton University at No. 1 and tied with Harvard University for second. The acceptance rate at Columbia is listed at less than 6%.
Buckel’s résumé includes being the student member of the Kent County Board of Education, executive president of the Kent County High School Student Government Association and president of the Clark E. Fontaine chapter of the National Honor Society.
He also is serving in the Maryland General Assembly Student Page Program during this year’s 90-day legislative session.
He is on the Kent County High School cross country team and has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.
