Town Hall Mourns Passing of Margo Bailey and Joan Merryman

September 2, 2020 by Spy Staff

Joan Merryman

The Town of Chestertown is greatly saddened by the passing of two great women who served the Town for many decades, Margo Bailey and Joan Merryman. Margo Bailey was elected to the Chestertown Council in 1991 and served as a Councilwoman until she was elected Mayor in 1993. For the next twenty years, she served the Town in that capacity and fought tirelessly for her many passions, especially the environment. Joan Merryman was hired by the Town in 1980 and for the next thirty years, was a steady presence at the front desk and as a stenographer in all Town meetings, and was known for her wry sense of humor.

JOAN MERRYMAN WAS MY BEST FRIEND WHEN WE LIVED IN NEW YORK AS THE MERRYMAN’S DID AT THE TIME. OUR HUSBANDS WORKED TOGETHER. I AM SO SADDENED FOR THE LOSS OF JOAN. WE HAD MANY YEARS OF CLOSE FRIENDSHIP AFTER THE MERRYMAN’S MOVED TO MARYLAND AND WE MOVED TO DAYTON, OHIO. SHE WOULD COME TO DAYTON TO STAY WITH ME AND I WOULD GO TO BALTIMORE TO BE WITH HER OVER ALL THE YEARS. ONE OF MY TRIPS THERE WE AND HER GOOD FRIEND, HOLDEN ROGERS, ATTENDED A LIVE PERFORMANCE OF LUCIANO PAVAROTTI. JOAN AND I LOVED PAVAROTTI AND WERE THRILLED TO BE THERE. I SHALL MISS HER GREATLY. SHE DID HAVE A WONDERFUL SENSE OF HUMOR, AND WAS A LOVELY, CARING WOMAN.

I will miss you, you met with me at Sam’s one day, took the time to listen to my observations and helped cement my love for this town, with all its flaws. You were tough but loving, a true testament to your adopted home. Rest in Peace, Mayor your tenacity will be greatly missed.
