To follow up on Monday night’s Town Council decision to accept as town speech the two street murals “Black Live Matter,” and “We Can’t Breathe, the Spy will offer a series of short interviews with council members and participating members of the community.
The Spy caught up with Chestertown Mayor Chris Cerino for his thoughts on the aftermath of Monday’s Town Council meeting.

The public streets are not a place for any political views to be a permanent fixture. The town is running off paying visitors due to the graffiti. If that’s acceptable then where’s the Stop the steal and We win Georga we win the country. It has no place painted on the street!! I dont shop in chestertown since I saw it, and I’m sure I’m not the o fly one. BAD IDEA!!

Since when is it the towns job to push political movements. What is the standard? Are you going to promote my causes? Are you going to fight for unborn babies? Since when does painting BLM on your streets unify a town or help solve any problem. IMO it just creates more division, more anger and more issues. I think the town could play a role in helping heal some divisions in our society but this isn’t the way. I must admit I don’t currently live in your town but I do visit regularly and spend money in your stores and restaurants and was very seriously considering moving there. But for now, I will stop coming there. I will miss the serenity of your historic town and will look for another town where they don’t push political agendas on me.
