While the League of Women Voters forum on Sunday afternoon at Chesapeake College for Republicans running in the 1st District primary race turned out to be a bust with only one candidate (Rep. Andy Harris) out of three showing up, which meant, according to League rules, the program was canceled, the Democrats seemed to make up for it by having all five of their primary candidates show up for their own LWV forum a few hours later.
Candidates Jesse Colvin, Allison Galbraith, Erik Lane, Michael Pullen, and Steve Worton all made their case for winning the Democratic nomination on June 26 to take on Representative Harris in the general election in November.
The Spy was there to capture their opening statements and responses to audience questions.

Jesse Colvin is my candidate. Please exercise YOUR right to vote in the Primary. Flip the 1st!
Michael McDowell says
Absolutely. Jesse Colvin is the only one of a fine group of candidate who can truly beat Harris. Alison Galbraith is passionate and energetic and Mike Pullen is a distinguished public servant but Jesse Colvin’s own energy and background and fund raising ability make him the most formidable candidate to face Harris in the fall. No question. Harris is not popular with independents, some Republicans, and he has reason to fear any Democrats who voted for Harris’s “hero” Trump last time will vote now for Jesse Colvin, a former Army Ranger captain with four combat tours in Afghanistan. The gerrymander is a problem but it may be overcome. Harris is a real extremist with his so-called “Freedom” (not) Caucus membership on the Hill, who say NO to any rational solutions, and he came up through the Tea Party. He is arrogant and rued and dismissive with his critics in public forums and has a know-it-all attitude redolent of the worst know-nothings. Time for change for the good of the Shore on both sides. It also says a lot about the state of the District 1 GOP with only Harris turning up for the League forum yesterday. The other two “challengers” in the GOP primary didn’t even have the courtesy to turn up, although one had accepted. ALL the Democratic candidates turned up and the audience at the Democratic event was large and the GOP one no more than 20 people.
Gren Whitman says
Colvin’s the most visible Democratic candidate as well.
Al Massoni says
Jesse Colvin believes that health care is a right and supports affordable health care through Medicare for all; he supports equal pay and justice for women; he advocates for safety nets for seniors and veterans, fending off GOP attacks on Social Security, Medicare and Meals on Wheels; he supports sensible reforms to reduce gun violence, banning bump stocks, with limits to high-capacity magazines and expanded background checks; and he will fight to lower prescription drug costs. These are some of the important issues affecting the 1st Congressional District and why I am supporting Jesse Colvin.
Debbie Wiener says
Allison gives us the best chance to beat Andy Harris because the majority of all District One voters, Republican and Democrat, are working women. She’s the toughest candidate when it comes to taking on Andy Harris . She is the only candidate who has the public policy expertise and federal government expertise to make an effective legislator for this District. She also served, as the spouse of an enlisted soldier, by raising two young boys on her own while her husband completed multiple tours of duty in Iraq. Voters hate the big money poured into Congressional races and Andy Harris has taken more than most. Truth be told, she’s the only Democrat in this race without any big money. Allison has individual voters behind her…more than any of the other candidates combined and more than Andy Harris. If the goal is to elect the one candidate who is getting more support to beat Andy Harris, the numbers don’t lie- it’s Allison.
James Weinberger says
In the district 1 democratic primary there’s hardly any daylight between the candidates. All want health care that works, education that works, social security that works, America’s military on guard abroad with long-time partners and no checks handed out to Alabama’s ex-Judge Roy Moore. Which means this election boils down to who can beat Andy Harris, who has failed miserably in dealing with these issues and therefore failed his constituency. I think the compelling distinction this year, as in in Virginia, NJ, Kentucky and many other states,is that a female candidate offering sensible ideas that is in touch with women from all backgrounds has the best chance to pull Democrats over the finish line in November and let Andy Harris get his dream job serving up epidurals at a Benghazi hospital.
