At last night’s Kent County Commissioner meeting, Superintendent of Schools Karen Couch made a strong appeal for the commissioners close an anticipated funding gap of $1.5 million in the soon to be proposed FY 17-18 Budget.
For Superintendent Couch, her message was clear. The Kent County Public Schools have made significant strides in the last few years to improve its performance ranking, but the small school district must at the same time, contend with an ongoing pattern of lower total school enrollment.
As noted by Dr. Couch, Kent Public Schools has lost 150 students over the last five years, and more alarmingly, anticipates another 113 student loss over the next five years.
In the first of two reports, Dr. Couch shares with the Council the kind of important investments that have been made to improve student outcomes, including raising the salaries of teachers, that must be maintained if the school district is to continue on its goal to be one of the top public school programs in the state.
