On Wednesday September 7, the Sultana Education Foundation will host a visit to Chestertown by the yacht AMERICA as part of the America’s Cup Tour. The 139-foot AMERICA, a replica of the original American schooner that successfully challenged British yachts in 1851 to establish the America’s Cup, is visiting ports in the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean in advance of the 2017 America’s Cup Races.
During her visit to Chestertown, AMERICA and Chestertown’s own schooner SULTANA, will offer free tours, opportunities to sail on both vessels, and a multimedia program on the America’s Cup at Sultana’s new Education Center.
“This opportunity is about more than engaging the yachting community in discussions about the current state of America’s Cup racing,” America skipper Troy Sears. “It’s also about generating greater interest and awareness among today’s youth. We’re looking forward to welcoming young minds aboard America to explore the science, technology, engineering and mathematics [STEM] disciplines that have always been an integral part of America’s Cup racing.”
The following activities are planned as part of AMERICA’s September 7 visit to Chestertown:
10:00am-12:30pm – Free tours of AMERICA and SULTANA
1:00-3:30pm – Joint Public Sails on AMERICA and SULTANA
4:00-6:00pm – Free Tours of AMERICA and SULTANA
6:30pm – Reception at Sultana’s Education Center at 200 South Cross Street
7:30pm – Presentation on the America’s Cup by Captain Troy Sears
