June 3, 2016 was a great day at Chester River Yacht and Country Club for 128 golfers and more than 30 volunteers to turn out for Chester River Health Foundation’s 22nd Annual Golf Tournament.
This year’s tournament proceeds were dedicated to benefit UM Shore Medical Center at Chestertown’s Surgical Services Department for the purchase of important new surgical equipment: high definition, white light digital colonoscopes and endoscopes.
“This new state of the art equipment, which is now on order, will help identify and treat colorectal cancers and other digestive system disorders at the earliest possible stage and thus, save lives,” says Maryann Ruehrmund, executive director, Chester River Health Foundation. “The tournament proceeds, which exceeded $41,000, were a big step toward covering the total equipment cost of $200,000. It was wonderful to see so many community residents — along with many of our hospital physicians, staff and vendors — come together to have fun while supporting such an important cause.”
Ruehrmund also expressed the Foundation’s gratitude to the tournament’s lead sponsors, Gerard S. O’Connor, MD, a board-certified general surgeon practicing at UM Shore Medical Center at Chestertown, and Mark Zwanger, MD, a former Chestertown Emergency Department physician and his husband, Malcolm Kram, DVM. “Dr. O’Connor, Dr. Zwanger and Dr. Kram demonstrated their strong support for our hospital’s continued service to theresidents of Kent and Queen Anne’s counties, and their leadership in supporting the golf tournament is much appreciated by the Foundation Board, the hospital staff and surely the community.”
According to Ruehrmund, this year’s tournament featured a “step aside” shotgun start, which golfers said they really liked.
