If RiverFest has half of Zane Carter’s enthusiasm, the celebration of arts and our riverfront has a good chance of igniting the space-time continuum.
The first annual event, to be held this coming Saturday, September 26, is a collaboration between Chestertown RiverArts, Washington College Center for Environment & Society, and SANDBOX, along with a host of other participating organizations and merchants.
The festival will be held in Wilmer Park and include a wide array of activities including music, RiverArts KidSPOT, Phillips Wharf Fish Mobile, a Sun, Sail and Paddle Expo showcasing kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, and sailboards, along with mile-long kayak and canoe races. There’s even a kayak Poker Run!
Sultana will be online for two public sails that day and the Center for the Environment and Society will also be taking folks on their research vessel, the Callinectes. Echo Hill Outdoor School will be hosting students and staff from Pennsylvania State University on it’s classic skipjack, The Elsworth and it’s historic Annie D.
Washington College will also be holding its always dramatic and whimsical 9th Annual Cardboard Boat Regatta at 3 PM.
The event’s centerpiece is a majestic 24+ wood sculpture designed by master wood artist Vicco von Voss and Jacquie von Voss with engineering support from Zane Carter and Ed Minch.
“The solar-powered sculpture will light up as the sun goes down and the full moon rises over the eastern shore of the Chester River. It will be a stunning spectacle to behold,” states the RiverArts website. Not to be missed, and von Voss’s sculpture heralds continued riverfront art by international artists sponsored by SANDBOX.
