One of the first things that Mid-Shore Pro Bono Executive Director Sandy Brown says right off the bat is that her organization is not “sexy.” In the world of Eastern Shore charities feeding the hungry, housing the homeless and providing health to the sick, providing free legal services for the poor falls very quickly on the priority list.
Nonetheless, Brown makes a strong case that these legal services are an essential part of the safety net for her clients, most of them women, unable to pay for legal help with divorces, child custody battles or financial settlements.
In her Spy interview, Sandy talks her client base, the challenges they face, and the extremely low number of lawyers signing up for pro-bono work in Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s and Talbot Counties to help the 140 cases that Mid-Shore Pro-Bono facilities each year.

My husband took many pro bono cases through the years. I became well aware of the need. Your group is giving an important service.
