children's doll making workshop - CopyOpen every Saturday free of charge to kids accompanied by their parents, grandparents, or other adult, KidSPOT provides an opportunity for children ages 2-12 to expand creative expression and creative problem-solving. Located right next door to the RiverArts Gallery at 315 High Street, KidSPOT invites children to play, create, and explore the arts and sciences. In November there will be two special workshops available for children ages 6-12.

On Saturday, November 15, 2-4pm, Amy Bower will offer Folk Dollmaking. In this workshop children will learn to make their own folk dolls. They will use newspaper and baling wire to create the moveable base of their dolls. Then they will wrap fabric, make clothes and decorate their dolls! The cost of the class is $20 per child. The registration deadline is November 12.

Amy has been an art teacher for the last 17 years in public and private schools. She was a museum educator at the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, NM where this folk doll project originated. Along with teaching at Friendship Montessori School for the past six years, she works out of her studio, Amy Bower Ceramics. One of her favorite things in the world is making art with children including her 7 year-old daughter and 3 year-old son.

Chestertown-based husband/wife, writer/illustrator duo Matthew Swanson and Robbi Behr will offer Reading and Bookmaking. They will give a short presentation/ slideshow on what it means to be an author and illustrator on Saturday, November 22 from 2-4pm. A reading from their children’s books will be followed by a book-making workshop. Every kid will leave the class with a book that he or she wrote and illustrated. The cost of the workshop is $10 per child. The registration deadline is November 19.

Matthew and Robbi run two small publishing companies. Idiots’ Books produces commercially viable picture books for adults and Bobbleday Books offers picture books and music for kids. They have published more than 50 illustrated books, teach and speak on creative entrepreneurship and collaboration, and blog daily about life with their three small children.

To register for these classes contact RiverArts at 410-778-6300, email [email protected] or go to our website where you can sign up, www.chestertownriverarts.org.
