University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Chestertown invites the public to Grand Opening and Community Open House for its new Emergency Department, set for Tuesday, September 16. The ceremonies begin at 5 p.m., followed by an open house and tours of the new department until 7 p.m.
The festivities will take place in front of the new, separate entrance to the Emergency Department located near the hospital’s new Main Entrance. Visitors also will be able to preview the hospital Auxiliary’s Gift Shop, which will be relocated just inside the new Main Entrance during the week prior to the Grand Opening.
“We’re celebrating a major milestone in Chestertown as we open this state-of-the-art Emergency Department for the community it serves,” says Ken Kozel, UM Shore Regional Health president and CEO, and host of the Grand Opening. The new ED will become operational in late September.
The $4.3 million Emergency Department was funded by University of Maryland Medical System, a $900,000 grant for this renovation through the Maryland Hospital Association’s Hospital Bond Project Review Program, and by support from the UM Chester River Health Foundation. The project was completed in two phases. The first phase included the creation of a new hospital entrance and lobby, and two new elevators. The second phase, which was the ED renovation and expansion, began in October, 2013.
The renovation increases the size for the ED from just over 4,500 square feet to nearly 8,000 square feet.Upgrades include:
- A separate walk-in entrance that provides convenience for emergency patients and added security for the entire hospital
- Larger lobby and waiting room for patients and their families
- Enclosed ambulance bay with access to life-saving technology
- 18 patient rooms with added privacy and comfort
- Private, specialized treatment rooms designated for behavioral health, pediatrics, trauma, women’s health and more.
Volunteer team members will be on hand to guide guests and answer questions, and light refreshments will be served. Guests are asked to park in the hospital parking lot on Brown Street or other clearly marked spaces nearby; trams will be available to take guests right to the event.
