Church Hill Theatre’s Green Room Gang summer campers will be singing, dancing and acting in performances of Pirates! and Beauty and the Beast Jr. on July 24, 25 and 26. Elementary through high school students have bonded through professional instruction, team exercises, hard work and plenty of fun to create fully choreographed and costumed musical theatre. These shows would be a great way to introduce younger children to the magic of live theater, for enthusiastic audience reaction only increases the enjoyment.
Pirates!, by John Jacobson and Roger Emerson and directed by Becca Van Aken, features the younger campers, GRG Jr. The pirates are entering a singing contest and are hoping that the “Queen of the High C’s” will win the contest because she can hit a “high C”; and will the young stowaway become a pirate? This is Van Aken’s 9th year leading the Green Room Gang Junior campers. She recently was seen in South Pacific at CHT, has appeared in many other musicals and dramas, and regularly appears as a nationally certified first grade teacher at Centreville Elementary School. Pirates features Dakota Arbutina, Hunter Arbutina, Connor Christopher, Hannah Conner, John Crook, Lindsay McCowan, Deja Marie Rasin, Grace Shepherd, Travis Stotts, and Riley Sutherland.
Beauty and the Beast Jr. is based on the classic Disney tale and features middle and high school students. The tale tells of Belle (the beauty) and how she taught the Beast to love again, thus lifting the spell and returning him to being a prince. Nina Sharp, a 2013 honors graduate of Washington College’s drama department and the Administrative Assistant at CHT, directs the Green Room Gang Senior production of Beauty and the Beast Jr. Performers are Morgan Armstrong, Sydney Christian, Megan Crump, Olivia Giuliano, Jesse Goodman, Lynsey Hildebrand, Lindsey Jones, Ian McGrory, Maya McGrory, Katie Sardo, Ian Stotts, Kira Wilson, Caitlin Wright and Linden Wright.
The Interns for Green Room Gang this summer are Shannon Whitaker, a rising senior theatre major at the University of New Haven and Kyle Lindenberger, a theatre major at Brooklyn College in NYC.
Church Hill Theatre is funded in part by a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council and grant support for the internships for Green Room Gang is funded by the Artistic Insights Fund of the Mid-Shore Community Foundation.
