Concern has been aired over management changes at the Chestertown Marina especially in light of the upcoming Tea Festival, one of the town’s busiest weekends. Town Manager Bill Ingersoll says that the marina is in good hands, at least temporarily as studies for the waterfront’s future continue.
Former marina manager Bill Landon terminated his agreement with the town two weeks ago. The marina, although owned by the town since 2012, has been operated as a business independent of the town.
“Changes are inevitable as we move forward to decide on plans for the marina and waterfront area,” said Ingersoll.
He adds that currently there is a pending three year dredging application in the State Waterway Improvement Fund (DNR) for $600,000 (100% grant) and also a three year $200,000 matching-grant application for bulkhead, dock and marina repairs.
“Next Wednesday, the town will be organizing a research ‘charette’ to study the current conditions of the aging infrastructure of bulkheads, the impact of dramatic tidal changes and other elements that need to be addressed, and this is a good opportunity to help out by becoming a member of a fact-finding team,” he added.
In the meantime, former Sultana Captain Bill Mylett will take over as the temporary marina manager to host arriving and departing boats during the Tea Party and busy summer season.
The fact-finding Marina Charette will take place Wednesday, May 28 at 6 p.m.The community is invited to participate. It will be held at the large storage facility in the marina yard.
