The 29th Annual Chesapeake Chamber Music (CCM) Festival will be held in Easton, MD, June 1 through June 15, 2014. The Festival will honor the past and look to the future in chamber music, featuring classic pieces as well as works by contemporary composers. This year’s Festival will showcase the CCM-commissioned work of Pulitzer Prize-Winning Composer John Harbison at St. Paul’s Church in Centreville, MD as part of the organization’s commitment to new music. This concert, “Bach and Harbison,” will be held on Sunday, June 8 at 4 p.m. and will feature Festival newcomer and internationally-known harpsichordist Andrew Appel, along with Festival favorites J. Lawrie Bloom on clarinet and Peggy Pearson on oboe.
The Festival offers six concerts, five artist recitals and two rehearsals open to the public at no charge. The 13 events are held in various Eastern Shore locations. A concert at Trinity Cathedral on Goldsborough Street in Easton, will kick off the two-week Festival on June 1 at 5:30 p.m. with a recital, “Beethoven, Beethoven, Beethoven,” featuring Festival favorites Catherine Cho on violin, Robert McDonald on piano, and Marcy Rosen on cello. In addition to performance locations in Easton and Centreville, the Festival will again hold a concert, “Saturday Serenades,” on Saturday, June 14 at 5:30 p.m. in St. Michaels, MD, highlighting the spirited works of Beethoven, Kodály, and Brahms.
The “Saturday Matinee” concert at the River House at Easton Club on June 7, will feature an afternoon of music, including works by Haydn, Rorem and Dvořák, and will be followed by a reception with abundant hors d’oeuvres. Another highlight of the two-week schedule will be the Friday, June 13 concert at the Avalon Theatre at 8 p.m., including a performance by the 2014 CCM Competition Gold Prize winner, The Wasmuth String Quartet.
In addition to the Competition winner, 21 artists will perform this year, including many familiar faces along with some newcomers to the Eastern Shore Festival scene. Among the new performers are Robin Scott on violin, Ahrim Kim on cello, Andrew Appel on harpsichord, Molly Morkoski on piano, and Adrian Morejon on bassoon. J. Lawrie Bloom, Bass Clarinet of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and Marcy Rosen, a founding member of the world-renowned Mendelssohn String Quartet, continue as Artistic Directors.
