On May 15th, both The Gunston School and Headmaster John Lewis were honored by the YMCA of the Chesapeake at their Diamond Anniversary Celebration, celebrating 60 years of service on the Eastern Shore.
Mr. Lewis was honored for the newly established partnerships with the YMCA, YMCA Camp Gunston and The Gunston Community Tennis Complex (GCTC). Dedicated to providing the youth of the Mid-Shore region with dynamic opportunities for education, recreation, and growth, YMCA Camp Gunston was created through a unique partnership between two of the Eastern Shore’s most notable youth-service organizations: YMCA of the Chesapeake and The Gunston School.
By combining Gunston’s educational resources and unique waterfront campus with the YMCA’s ability to offer diverse, high-quality, and safe summer camping opportunities for youth of all ages, YMCA Camp Gunston is a strong new thread in the educational and recreational fabric of our community. Construction on a 6-court community tennis complex has begun and should be operational by late June. It will be an ADA-compliant facility that includes “blended lines” for promoting youth tennis, the GCTC will be the only facility of its kind in the Mid-Shore region.
The dinner honored local volunteers and organizations from each of the YMCA’s service areas. Volunteer MVPs were selected in each community and were honored for their individual impact and contribution to the YMCA and helping further the YMCAs cause of strengthening community. Every day, the YMCA works side by side with our neighbors to ensure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.
